Faith in Florida to Hold Faith Forum with Elected Officials and Candidates for State wide Offices

Sept 10, 2014

Rights Restoration, Immigrant Justice, Health Care and Voter Engagement top the Agenda

ORLANDO – Faith in Florida leaders from across the state will host a faith forum with elected officials and current candidates for statewide offices to brief them on issues, including rights restoration, immigrant justice and health care on Saturday, September 13 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Orlando.

The purpose of the forum is to have elected officials and candidates for state-wide offices hear personal stories from members of various congregations on how current policies have impacted them, their families and their communities.

“We believe the time is right now for people of faith to directly address our elected officials and candidates for statewide offices on multiple community issues, including voting rights restoration for disenfranchised Floridians, immigrant justice and health care,” said Jerry Peña, Faith in Florida’s Executive Director. “We are assembling this forum to highlight the common core faith values among all faith traditions as it pertains to valuing the lives of all of God’s children, and our calling to treat his children with dignity.”

Faith in Florida will also announce a voter engagement campaign led by clergy leaders from multi-racial communities to engage new or low-propensity voters whose voices have been ignored and have been systematically locked out of the voting process. The campaign will re-define what it means to be a faith voter in Florida by putting the focus on issues that are most important to underrepresented communities.

As people of faith, Faith in Florida leaders believe their call is to unite their communities to speak with one voice, and constructively engage decision makers and institutions to address long standing issues that put social and economic pressure on families.
